Councillor for the Spur Tree Division in the Manchester Municipal Corporation, Ervin Facey is taking a leave of absence.

Just over a week ago, he resigned as deputy mayor but remained as councillor following the discovery that he signed documents for the payment of more than  $1 million to an entity and an individual before the necessary approval.

Two members of the council's accounts department also resigned.

In a statement Tuesday, the People's National Party said Facey has written to Mandeville Mayor Donovan Mitchell requesting leave of absence.

Mitchell is also the chairman of the Manchester Municipal Corporation.

The PNP said Facey is seeking leave of absence while police investigations take place into the irregularities.

"In the present circumstances, both for reasons of health and in order to facilitate the investigations, I am proceeding on a leave of absence. I will fully cooperate with the investigations and urge all concerned to do likewise and hope that they are done speedily and effectively," Facey was quoted as saying.
