Kingston Wharves Limited recently announced its Summer Employment and Internship Programme with a cohort of 40 students. The students will be posted in various departments for four weeks to three months, which started in June and will run through to September, with the aim of them gaining valuable on-the-job experience and key life skills, and project management training being a key component.

Grantley Stephenson, CEO of Kingston Wharves Limited, explained that the programme, which has been ongoing over the years, was previously primarily for the children of employees. However, this year, it was felt that it was necessary to expand the opportunities to students of the Caribbean Maritime University, University of Technology, University of the West Indies, and students from a few high schools. Stephenson further stated: "With our continued support for logistics, we saw this as an opportunity to expose the students to practical applications at Kingston Wharves, both on and off port, given our recent developments."

The programme has been planned in order to emphasise transitioning of the interns to the workplace environment, preparing them with skills that they will find valuable going forward. In addition to the normal orientation, interns will get an introduction to project management and in-depth safety orientation, which also includes a compliance exam. Interns will be placed at various locations, including the Total Logistics Facility, Global Auto Logistics Centre, and the main port terminal.

CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY

Kingston Wharves takes its responsibility as a good corporate citizen seriously, particularly its commitment to the youth of this country, through initiatives such as this and others that have been in effect for a number of years. In underscoring this, the company indicates that it will also be entering its 29th year in presenting the KWL Under-15 Cricket Tournament.

Kingston Wharves, the leading multipurpose port operator in the region, has been undergoing a modernisation programme and expansion in the field of shipping logistics. The company operates, in addition to its port facilities, the Total Logistics Facility for the deconsolidation of cargo and retail shipping, and the Global Auto Logistics Centre. The company maintains nine deep-water berths which facilitate various cargo types, including automobiles, containers, general break-bulk and bulk cargoes.
