Javaughn Gordon named youth mayor for St Catherine

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine:
The St Catherine Municipal Corporation has selected 18-year-old Javaughn Gordon, an upper sixth-form student at the St Jago High School, as its youth mayor for 2018-19.
The annual event staged as a feature of Local Government Month had seven participants representing seven of the 29 divisions in the municipality participating.
The month is being observed under the theme 'Protecting The Vulnerable ... Establishing Hope Through Local Governance.'
Gordon who resides in Princessfield, Linstead, was successful in sociology, communication studies, law and management of business, gaining four ones in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Unit One. He is currently pursuing these subjects in Unit 2 in upper sixth form and was adjudged the most eloquent presenter, advocating in his presentation for a ban to be placed on sugary products in schools as a means of reducing obesity.
As part of his function throughout the year, Gordon will be required to complete a community project utilising $500,000 made available by the minister of local government.
"I am delighted to be given this responsibility. I will be concentrating on building a netball/basketball court in my community to bring the youths together in a harmonious way. For me, it will be an ongoing project even after my tenure is up," he told The Gleaner.
Gordon said he plans to exercise strict time management to facilitate studies, community work as well as his duties as youth mayor for the parish.
UWI student Julane Allison was second-place winner and will serve as deputy youth mayor. Third place was awarded to Chaldene Henry.
