Opposition disappointed with delay of stakeholders meeting on crime and national security

The Opposition says it is extremely disappointed that tomorrow's meeting with stakeholders to discuss national security and crime has been delayed. 

The Government and the Opposition met last week and agreed to hold the talks.

The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) says it is extremely disappointed that the meeting with stakeholder groups, as agreed at the Vale Royal joint meeting with the government, will not be held tomorrow.

The Opposition says it considers these discussions with the private sector, civil society, human rights groups, churches and the Bar Association, as critical in achieving national consensus on national security and crime management.

In a statement today, Opposition Leader Dr Peter Phillips said although representatives of the Prime Minister had initially agreed to and announced the meeting for Wednesday, January 16, 2019, he had received communication from the Office of the Prime Minister indicating that there are challenges relating to attendance of some stakeholders and his own schedule.

Dr Phillips says he is disappointed that meeting will not be held as planned, but the Opposition remains optimistic and ready to participate in this critical discussion with the civil society stakeholders to fulfill a commitment given to the people of Jamaica in the Joint statement from the Vale Royal Meeting.

He is, therefore, calling for the Government to quickly propose a new date.
