Death penalty looms for Jamaican ex-cop charged with US murder

A former member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) might face the death penalty after being charged with two other men for murder in a home invasion that left one man dead and another seriously injured last year.
The ex-policeman, Omar Miller, 41, of Lauderdale, Florida; Devon Quinland, 33, of Westminster; and Andre Andrews, 34, of Miramar, Florida, were charged with multiple felony counts, including murder, conspiracy and assault.
Prosecutors could pursue the death penalty because the killing is alleged to have occurred during the commission of a burglary.
Caught on video
The Gleaner reported last month that the Irvin, California, home invasion that occurred in October was caught on closed-circuit television.
Miller, popularly called ‘Miller Nine’, who also dabbled in music as a producer, and Andrews were caught in Miami a month after the incident and release of the CCTV footage by investigators.
Quinland was reportedly held subsequently in Westminster.
Police identified the slain man as 20-year-old Raymond Alcala.
Andrews and Miller were extradited to California on January 22, the DA’s office reported.
All three defendants are being held without bail.
The Gleaner understands that none of the men entered pleas during their initial court appearances on Thursday in the Central Justice Center.
Their arraignment is set for February 28.
This, however, is not Miller’s first brush with the law, as he was found not guilty of murder in 2011 while serving as a member of the JCF.
Miller was one of four policemen who walked free following the murder trial of 18-year-old Grants Pen resident André ‘Kunte’ Thomas after they were acquitted by a 12-member jury.
