Another delay in Mario Deane case

WESTERN BUREAU:

The Mario Deane murder case, which has been crippled by delays since the matter was first heard in 2014, hit yet another snag yesterday when the St James Circuit Court was told for the fifth consecutive time that the psychiatric evaluation report for Marvin Orr, one of two inmates charged, was not ready.

High Court Justice Glen Brown set March 25 as the new date after prosecutor Yanique Gardener updated the court on the absence of the psychiatric evaluation report.

Orr and Adrian Morgan, the other inmate charged with murder, were ordered to be further remanded.

When the matter of the outstanding psychiatric evaluation report first emerged on September 18, 2019, the court was told that the treatment data for Orr and Morgan, who both suffer from mental disorders, were not ready. New dates were set for October 3, 2019, then November 25, 2019, and then to January 7, 2020, when a report was finally submitted for only Morgan.

Although the information had been submitted to the court prior to September 18, the request was made on that date following the revelation that Dr Myo Kyaw Oo, the only doctor in Jamaica who is licensed to do forensic psychiatric reports, wanted additional information.

Deane was brutally beaten on August 3, 2014, while in custody at the Barnett Street Police Station in Montego Bay for possession of a ganja spliff. He died three days later.
