THE EDITOR, Madam:

The proverbial crossing of the political aisle by former People’s National Party Councillor (Trafalgar division) Kari Douglas bears lessons that the average onlooker would be wise to heed. First, it shows that millennials – those born between 1980 and 1996 – are unbound by tradition when making choices.

The average Jamaican millennial is likely bold, an aspiring (or actual) world traveller and a bearer of a global world view. Second, the millennial is an independent thinker, inquisitive and unlikely to accept something because ‘it has always been done this way’. After all, this is the generation whose younger members do not know a Google-less world!

It is undeniable that millennials have changed how the world interacts, grown wealth at a breakneck pace and disrupted entire industries, such as advertising.

This has also played out in the local landscape sphere where the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has changed political communication in both arenas of traditional and social media. Millennials within the party, in conjunction with their peers, have contributed strongly to this new normal.

In light of the aforementioned, Tuesday’s events at the Kingston & St Andrew Municipal Council should not surprise many, tradition and heritage notwithstanding, as the JLP continues to find increasing favour with the nation’s youth.

All said, on behalf of Generation 2000’s elected officers, Management Committee and General Membership, I extend to Councillor Douglas a hearty welcome to the greatest political party in the Western Hemisphere!
