Koffee, Chronixx light up Netflix thriller soundtrack

Reggae music received another huge boost on the silver screens recently when two tracks from entertainers Chronixx and Koffee were listed on the official soundtrack of one of Netflix’s latest thrillers, Fatale. The movie which stars Hollywood A-listers Michael Ealy and Hilary Swank chronicles the life of an ex-basketball player-turned-successful businessman (Ealy), whose normal marital life is turned upside down after a one-night stand with a determined detective (Swank). Ealy, who plays Derrick Tyler in the movie, finds himself the prime suspect in a murder investigation led by Swank, who plays Valeri Quinlan after his wife ends up dead.
Fatale was released in December 2020. In the scene that brought Ealy and Swank together for the first time on screen, the pair sat at the bar of a nightclub with Koffee’s Toast playing in the background. Chronixx’s feature came in the form of a collaboration with American RnB group Free Nationals. Their song, Eternal Light, which was released in 2019, was used in a scene where Ealy and Swank attempt to get more acquainted. Koffee and Chronixx were also officially credited for their work on the movie’s official soundtrack released by the IMBD platform.
JAMAICAN ACTS
Koffee, whose real name is Mikayala Simpson, was listed as writer and performer by the online movie site while Chronixx, whose real name is Jamar McNaughton, was credited as writer. Both Jamaican acts were listed among artistes like US female rapper Saweetie, RnB sensation Jhene Aiko, veteran soul singers Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds, Teddy Riley and Keith Sweat, whose work also featured in the movie.
Jamaican music remains a popular pick when it comes to movie soundtracks but the Grammy Kid seems to be making quite the impression on Hollywood composers responsible for finding appropriate songs for films. In 2019, the same Toast track was picked up by Academy-award winning writer Jordan Peele, who used the mega-hit in his blockbuster horror film US, starring Lupita Nyong’o. Koffee has also been making quite the impression on gamers as her song Rapture (the remix), which features dancehall artiste Govana, was picked up by FIFA 21 last September. The track features on the game’s official soundtrack. Chronixx has also enjoyed similar success in the gaming world as his track, Odd Ras, featured in Grand Theft Auto V back in 2013. That gaming soundtrack also featured work from other Jamaican artistes, including Popcaan, Vybz Kartel, Protoje and Konshens.
