Simmons laments Windies batting after whitewash

West Indies head coach Phil Simmons says there much work to be done with the regional side after their 3-0 One-Day International (ODI) series defeat to Bangladesh yesterday.

The inexperienced regional side succumbed to a 120-run loss in the third and final match of the series in Chattogram, a result which has left the West Indies with no points after three games in the newly formed ICC World Cup Super League series.

Bangladesh, with their three wins, leap to second in the table on 30 points, 10 less than leaders Australia, who have played six games.

It was a tad better batting display from the Jason Mohammed-led side, with Rovman Powell once again leading from the front, with a defiant 47 from 49 balls in the West Indies total of 177 all out in 44 overs and two deliveries.

Jamaican Nkrumah Bonner also showed some fight with his knock of 31 from 66 balls, while Raymon Reifer chipped in with 27. For the third straight time, the West Indies failed to bat the full 50 overs, and Simmons says this is a real concern heading into future series.

“I think our performances have been under par and I think we didn’t bat as well as we can do,” he said. “The bowling wasn’t that bad, and on this wicket, to limit them to under 300 has been good, but our batting has been poor throughout the series.”

Despite showing a bit more resolve against the Bangladesh spinners, it was the home side seamers, trained by former West Indies coach Otis Gibson, who did the damage up front, with three wickets from Mohammed Saifuddin and two from Mustafizur Rahman.

BETTER SLOW BOWLING

Off-spinner Mehidy Hasan also picked up two scalps, and with that, Simmons laments the team’s need to play slow bowling better in future series.

“We need to play spin better and we need to be able to rotate the strike and score boundaries in Bangladesh a lot better, so there is work to be done,” he said.

The West Indies bowling has been the better part of the team’s performances throughout the series with Simmons singling out left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein as the find of the tournament.

He also credited Jason Mohammed for his leadership despite the defeats. The Trinidadian made it clear that the players have to show more character, heart, and determination going forward, but said that the scenario is not all doom and gloom.

“We have lost the first series, but there is a lot of other series to play,” Simmons said. “We just need to make sure that when we play the other series, we get points in every series. From here now, the only where we can go is up.”

The West Indies will now turn their attention to the two-Test series against Bangladesh, starting on February 3 in Chattogram.
