School rules are rules

The EDITOR, Madam:

I don’t think the facts of the matter were investigated in the Letter of the Day, dated May 3, 2022 – ‘When black hair is against the rules’.

It is not a case of black hair being against the rules. It is the hairstyle that breached the school rules. The issue of schools having a problem with a student’s hairstyle has nothing to do with the ethnicity of the student. One has to stick with the situation and not stray from the facts. The writer made mention of Bogle and Nanny, but they were adults. We are talking about children in school.

One would think the writer was speaking on behalf of black people, but I think very few blacks would agree with what was stated.

These are teenage students/children in school. Schools have standards. Children are asked to comply with school rules, which are clearly explained before admittance.

Naturally, the rules will not meet the approval of all, but the educators have put them together as the most workable they could come up with.

Adults in Jamaica have a wide variety of fashions, males and females. Men buckle their trousers around their buttocks. Women wear torn-up jeans. Plus, men and women wear a wide range of ‘high’ hairstyles, just to mention a few fashions.

These styles and fashions, and numerous other things, are not allowed in schools, and rightly so.
