WI women slapped with fine for slow over rate

ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC):

WEST INDIES Women will forfeit nearly half their match fee after being slapped with a fine by the International Cricket Council for a slow over rate during Sunday’s opening One-Day International (ODI) against England.

The hosts were adjudged to be two overs short of their target by match referee Denavon Hayles, as England marched to an imposing 307 for seven from their 50 overs after being sent in at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground.

As a result, West Indies were slapped with a 40 per cent fine, in keeping with the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which says players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Captain Hayley Matthews pleaded guilty to the offence, negating the need for a formal hearing.

West Indies went down in the contest by 142 runs after mustering only 165 all out off 40.3 overs in reply.

The West Indies women also lost the second ODI by 142 runs, getting to 118 all out off 31.3 overs in chase of England’s 260 off 48.1.

The final game is scheduled for Friday.
