Mandeville Maths Marathon prepares students

The Mathematics Marathon, hosted on the grounds of the Mandeville HEART Trust/ NTA’s Adult Education Centre recently, was dubbed a resounding success by scores of candidates who took the CXC (CSEC) Mathematics Examination.

The Mathematics Marathon, themed ‘End Maths Phobia’, was, for the first time, extended to candidates of the wider community who are not enrolled in the HEART Trust/ NTA. Director of the High School Diploma Equivalency (HSDE) Programme Rhoda Crawford said that the organisation decided to extend an invitation to 150 unaffiliated candidates registered for the CSEC examination in the parish of Manchester as a way of enhancing their chances of success in the upcoming exams as mathematics is often a feared subject. She added that the initiative also provided the opportunity for giving back to the community and for the marketing of the organisation’s HSDE Programme.

The candidates, who were treated to five hours of rigorous instruction, were also gifted with past papers from 2016 to 2018 and offered the opportunity to join the organisation’s scheduled evening classes at no cost.

Director Rhoda Crawford said: “I was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming interest generated by the initiative and am very happy that our doors did not close on anyone. I believe this initiative is a step in the right direction, and its impact is far-reaching and will influence many similar events in the near future.”
