WISDOM OF THE WEEK

Identity crisis may be root of problems

Published:Sunday | October 15, 2023 | 12:06 AM

Each morning, we start our day with catching up with headlines, which, in most cases, are so heart-shaking that most of us think “How can people be so evil?” Let us understand what the root of evil is and how to transform the evil into divine. In today’s world, identity plays a pivotal role in our everyday experience, and we see people experiencing identity crisis or even identity theft. But, what is an identity?

IDENTITY: A MENTAL FINGERPRINT

In the strictest form of its definition, an identity is the set of characteristics and qualities that make each individual unique. It’s the sum total of one’s beliefs, experiences, and cultural background. Our identity is like a mental fingerprint that distinguishes an individual from everyone else. It encompasses name, gender, nationality, profession, and even the personal quirks.

So, how do we create our identities?

The truth is, we are not born with it. Instead, we craft it over a lifetime. Our beliefs, thoughts, and cultural influences shape who we become. This malleability can be both a blessing and a curse. While it allows us to adapt and thrive in various situations, it can also restrict our overall growth.

LIMITS OF IDENTITY

Holding too tightly to one’s set identity can limit personal growth. Imagine your identity as a cocoon. While it provides comfort and security, it can prevent you from spreading your wings and discovering your full potential. This is especially true when it comes to spiritual growth. On external grounds, we want to be on the highest peak of achievements but, in the core of our being, we hold onto the same identity for decades. Our identity is dynamic, evolving aspects of our existence each day until we touch the core truth. Now is the time to alleviate our material identities and return to our true identity. Some simple steps to do that are:

SELF-REFLECTION

Start by reflecting on what you consider yourself to be at present. Ask yourself, were you that when you were born, or, will you remain that after your death, is that permanent? If not, then you have attached yourself to something mortal, and a threat to this short-lived identity will cause one or the other evil experience in you.

OPENNESS TO UNDISCOVERED TRUTH

Truth is eternal, never changing. Anything that changes with time isn’t eternally true. Check your identities. If they are not eternal, then we need to set a new identity that is true and everlasting.

In essence, we are souls playing different roles in this stage of life. Roles don’t define us. We are eternally peaceful, joyful, and blissful. Let’s shed the false, adopted mortal identities and experience the divine self, our true identity in our daily lives.
