Do you make habits or do habits make you?

In the symphony of life, actions compose the melodious notes that define our existence. From the involuntary rhythm of our heartbeat to the conscious decisions we make, every moment is a manifestation of our actions. Actions when repeated become habits, but amid this orchestrated chaos, a crucial question emerges: Do we make habits, or do habits define us?

While the initial response would be, of course, we make habits. But a closer examination of our daily lives reveals a different reality. The majority of our actions are reactions to other people’s actions, shaping habits that tie us to consequences and the influence of others. The key lies in distinguishing between actions born from our true state of being and those that are merely shadows of others’ actions and external forces.

In our extra-busy lives, it’s essential to recognise the power of actions in shaping habits. Rather than being slaves to existing habits, the journey to self-mastery involves conscious decision-making and implementing them in our actions. Whether it’s the reaction to someone’s anger or appreciation; support, or denial, it’s not external events that are of significance, but our habits that determine that our responses are of more concern. Breaking free from our older patterns requires a shift from reactive to proactive living. The art of being a true maker of habits lies in the ability to choose our actions consciously, ensuring that they align with our authentic selves. This empowerment grants us the freedom to navigate through life without being imprisoned by the actions of others.

BECOMING SLAVES

Regardless of whether habits are perceived as good or bad, the issue lies in becoming slaves to them. The call to be the master of one’s actions is an invitation to experience true freedom. Every habit, when under our control, serves as a tool for a more convenient life. The focus should not be on labelling habits as good or bad, but on maintaining mastery over each of them.

Becoming the master of habits comes through the continuous practice of self-awareness and conscious decision-making. Life’s beauty is revealed when we stand as the masters behind our habits, capable of transforming and evolving as needed. This awareness serves as an alchemical process, gradually dissolving unnecessary habits and allowing for personal growth.

In a world where mastery is often associated with skills and knowledge, let us not forget the mastery over habits, senses, and actions. Life is not merely a compilation of habits. It is a canvas where the conscious master paints the strokes of awareness. Embrace this awareness, and watch as the superfluous habits fade away, leaving behind a life that is truly lived.
