Feb 25: Jamaican stocks slide on election day
The Jamaican stock market chalked up a fairly robust day of trading on election day, but market mood sent the value of stocks down.
The Jamaica Stock Exchange Combined Index lost 842 points or 0.5 per cent on Thursday to close at 166,544.40 points.
Thirty three stocks traded, 17 of which lost value, 15 appreciated and a single stock held its position.
The three primary market movers, all of which were lossmakers, accounted for 46.5 per cent of all trading activity — National Commercial Bank, down two cents at $41; Lasco Manufacturing, which ended 12 cents lower at $3.70; and Jamaica Broilers Group, which lost six cents to close at $14.45.
Overall, just over six million shares traded valued at more than $98 million.
The combined index includes the main, junior and US dollar equities markets. The JSE Index rose by 32 points at 157,673.33 points; the Junior Market Index gave up 96 points to close down at 1,978.64 points; while the JSE USD Equities Index advanced by 0.6 point to close at 150.97 points.
