Kaya to open herb house costing over $60 million

Herb house operator Kaya Inc will open a third medical ganja café in St Andrew on Thursday after spending $62 million on the leased facility.

The multipurpose venue on Lady Musgrave Road will span one acre, with the herb house and associated food facilities taking up 4,100 square feet.

“I wanted to make sure that we had the perfect setting to showcase Kaya’s ganja retail model and in-house brands, Kaya extracts, pizza, and café; where you can see a local company with strong roots in the area providing premium ganja products, service and curated retail experience,” said Bali Vaswani, chairman and chief ganja officer at Kaya.

The venue will have an amphitheatre sunken garden for live events. This is the third of seven planned locations for Kaya. The company launched its first café and dispensary in Ocho Rios, St Ann, in March 2018, costing some $76 million, and its second in Falmouth, Trelawny, in September of that year, costing $19 million to set up. It aims to grow its network of cafés to seven in the short term. That and future dispensaries are fed by Kaya’s herb farm in St Ann.

All venues seek to leverage business from tourists that pass through the north coast. The latest venue, however, will seek to also attract locals along with overseas travellers. It will target local music and art creatives with live events, but also business travellers, those using bed-and-breakfast facilities and cruise passengers.

Vaswani said the Lady Musgrave Road store should open for business on December 19. Vaswani previously listed Negril, Portmore, Port Antonio and Port Royal as other locations under consideration.
