Sagicor hires new CFO as Carter retires

Ivan Carter retired as chief financial officer of Sagicor Group Jamaica last Friday and was immediately succeeded by Andre Ho Lung on Monday, April 20.

The new man, who was educated at The University of the West Indies, has a financial background in both banking and insurance.

His last job was with National Commercial Bank Jamaica as the assistant general manager for finance. He was also at one time the vice-president for finance and investments at Scotia Jamaica Life Insurance, a company that last year was nearly sold to Sagicor’s regional parent, but the deal was scuttled when the parties failed to agree on final terms of the sale.

Sagicor Group Jamaica operates Jamaica’s largest insurance company, but it also has businesses in banking, investment and property services. The company that was founded by Jamaica’s R. Danny Williams has gone through ownership changes and is now ultimately controlled by a Canadian outfit called Alignvest.

H&L beefs up e-commerce, offers home delivery

Hardware & Lumber Limited, retailer of construction, home improvement and agricultural products, has integrated the messaging service WhatsApp into its sales channels.

The company, which operates a chain of 10 H&L Rapid True Value stores and five H&L Agro stores, has also increased the number of products featured on its website to 2,000.

The retail chain is attempting to drive sales through e-commerce channels in response to CIVID-19 social-distancing protocols. Customers may opt for kerbside pickup of products ordered online or through the messaging app, or otherwise have them delivered to their door by H&L.

“There is little doubt that COVID-19 will change the face of retail. There is a surge in e-commerce that is not only driven by our existing customers but also by first-time visitors who are trying to figure out how to get on with their lives, farms and businesses despite the required restrictions,” said Managing Director Marcus Richards in a statement.
