Two Bermudian men held in UK on terrorism charges

LONDON, CMC – The police in Bermuda and the United Kingdom are reporting that two Bermudian men have been arrested on terrorism-related charges in Britain.

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) confirmed that the two, who have been living in Britain “for a significant period of time”, were arrested after UK authorities were alerted to a residence in Whitefield, Bury, Greater Manchester on June 4.

The two men were remanded in custody when they appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court and are scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing at the Old Bailey in London on Friday next week, authorities said.

The Greater Manchester Police reported that one of the men, Hisham Waheed Muhammad, 24, is charged with preparing for acts of terrorism.

The other man, Faisal Ibn al Hajj Muhammad Abu Ahmad, 23, is charged with failing to notify the authorities.

The Greater Manchester Police said they launched an investigation on June 4 after “reports that suspicious items had been found at an address on Victoria Avenue”.

UK media reported that weapons and other combat equipment, along with extremist material supporting so-called Islamic State, were allegedly found at the home.

“The Bermuda Police Service is liaising with the UK authorities regarding this matter and conducting local enquiries. However, to date no information has come to light that raises similar concerns locally,” said a police spokesperson.
