Jailbreak in Trinidad, police searching for prisoners

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Law enforcement authorities are searching for eight prisoners, including seven on murder charges, who escaped from the Golden Grove Prison in Arouca on Tuesday night.

“They are notorious and they could harm,” Prison Commissioner Gerard Wilson, warned during a radio interview here on Wednesday.

He said the men, including Anil Sookoo, who had escaped custody from the facility in March last year, had escaped from the Remand Yard on Tuesday night by cutting through the bars of the prison cell in which they were being held.

“It is a pretty small hole, so I guess they may have fasted during the period in order to make good their escape,” he said, adding “seven of them are charged for murder and one for attempted robbery and arms and ammunition.

“My concern at this time is for the safety and security of the citizens out there because in my view these persons are notorious, I know them and I know they can do harm. My concern is that we recapture them as soon as possible.”

Wilson said that it becomes difficult when you have a maximum security prison and remand is within the compound of a minimum security prison.

“So once the inmates get out of that maximum security prison it is easy for them to get over the fence that is why the maximum security prison further down the highway is more appropriate for persons charged for murder and more serious offences.

“However, because of the overcrowding situation we have no choice but to move persons around,” Wilson added.

The authorities have since circulated the pictures of the escaped prisoners on social and mainstream media.
