Investigations under way following major fire at hotel in Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Firefighters in Guyana are investigating the cause of a fire that  damaged a major section of the 194-room Ramada Princess Hotel on the East Bank Demerara on Saturday night.

The Guyana Fire Services (GFS) reported that the “fire broke out on the fourth floor in room 431 of the six-storey building” as it hosted guests who were in the country for the ongoing Cricket Carnival and Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

The statement from the GFS said they were notified of the fire around 10:47 p.m. and 28 firefighters along with fire tenders from two fire stations, three ambulances and a hydraulic system, which was “used to rescue a number of persons who were trapped on the sixth floor of the hotel," were dispatched to the scene.

According to the GFS statement, “One guest was conveyed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation by Emergency Medical Technicians for treatment of smoke inhalation,” adding that “there were no serious injuries or casualties.”

“The room of origin, along with rooms 433 and 435 sustained significant damage,” the GFS said.

President Irfaan Ali along with Vice President Bharrat Jadgeo, Minister of Home Affairs, were among government officials who arrived on the scene last night to assess the situation.
