Police officer among suspects after drugs found on Surinam Airways

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – Police say that one of their colleagues is being questioned in relation to the discovery of  593 kilogrammes of cocaine on board a plane belonging to the national carrier, Surinam Airways (SLM) last month.

The Police public relations said in a statement that two persons were arrested on Monday night by members of the Narcotics Brigade, bringing to eight, the number of suspects being questioned in connection with the drug seizure on March 6.

It said that among them are a police officer from the Combating International Drugs Team (BID Team), five loaders, a security guard from the SLM and the loading supervisor at a contract company that provides services for the airline.

The BID Team, which is specially deployed to investigate drug trafficking at the airport, said that the drugs were hidden in 17 boxes. The authorities said also that Suriname has been combatting a problem of cocaine being concealed among vegetables exported to the Netherlands.

The street value of the cocaine found on the plane has not been disclosed.
