Man arrested in Suriname for attempting to export cocaine in Christmas cake

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – Police in Suriname have arrested a 20-year-old man after he tried to mail 92 grams of cocaine hidden in a Christmas cake.

Police said that the man, with the initials RZ, was arrested by the Narcotics Brigade after he brought a box for shipment at a postal company.

Customs investigators discovered that the box contained a Christmas cake in which the cocaine was hidden.

The Police Public Relations said that this is not the first time that the man has sought to export drugs this way.

In July, he was arrested along with “accomplices”.

Following his latest arrest, he was brought before the court and after consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, has been remanded.

Meanwhile, police said a 69-year-old woman with Dutch nationality was arrested last Friday at Johan Adolf Pengel Airport after she had hidden 7,869 grams of cocaine in jeans in her luggage.

The police said that during baggage check the drugs were discovered.  

She was due to fly out to the Netherlands.

The Police Public Relations said that the suspect and the drugs have been handed over to the Narcotics Brigade department, and that the woman has been remanded.
