Tessanne, Day light up CFW stage on closing night
Jamaica's songbird Tessanne Chin brought the curtains down on a weekend of fashion as the 2016 staging of Pulse's Caribbean Fashionweek came to a close.
As far as tributes to the late Prince goes, Chin stole the spotlight and had the audience captivated by her set in an ode to the late pop icon.
"He was an amazing singer, songwriter and performer, and I am just truly honoured to pay tribute to Prince. He was someone I really adored," she said.
Prince would have been pleased with the set put together by Chin. Packing some powerful vocals, the Hideaway singer belted out the lyrics to some of Prince's most popular tracks, including Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry, and Purple Rain. The latter she performed with her own style and flair, a move the audience appreciated, as they sang along.
PRINCE TRIBUTE
In keeping with the Prince tribute, Pulse's team booked Morris Day and the Times, Prince's band, to give a special performance in memory of the pop legend. Their performance, however, lacked the tribute aspect, as most of the songs performed by the group were from their own catalogue.
Day, the band's lead singer, was a part of Prince's Purple Rain and was in his full element on Sunday night. He danced up a storm while performing on stage, much to the delight of the audience - especially the female patrons. The group performed hits such as Oak Tree, Fishnet, Jerk Out, Get it Up, and thrilled the audience with song after song.
Though they didn't perform much in terms of songs from Prince's catalogue, the audience didn't seem to mind, as Day's demeanour and style reminded them somewhat of the late singer.
British artiste Mark-Anthony Abel also performed in tribute to Prince earlier in the evening.
Comparing the 2016 staging to that of previous years, some patrons openly expressed dissatisfaction with this year's event, saying that the venue and the overall vibe of this year's show lacked the zeal to which they were accustomed.
Nevertheless, the event went on, showcasing the best of the fashion from previous nights. The colour purple, reminiscent of Prince, was also prominent on the runway.
