Published:Thursday | January 19, 2017 | 12:00 AM

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's (JCDC) Drama Competition's categories are fantasy, gospel drama, tea meeting, farce, tragedy, comedy, musical, straight drama, experimental drama, skit (10-30 minutes), short play and improvisation. Auditions for those entering the Drama Competition (as well as the other performing arts competitions) began on January 16 and close on February 17.

Those who want to enter the JCDC's Creative Writing Competition have until the end of April to submit their entries. Plays written for the theatre may be full-length (60-120 minutes) or one-act (30-45 minutes). They could also be radio plays (five-60 minutes), television scripts (60-120 minutes) or film scripts (60-120 minutes).

LEGAL INFORMATION

A word of caution. The competitions' entry forms include a section captioned 'Legal Information' which might turn off some writers. It reads in part:

"The entrant [who wins an award] assigns to the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission ... the exclusive worldwide rights to ... produce, reproduce, publish, exhibit and distribute mechanical audiovisual, sound and image carriers such as videos, DVDs, compact discs, external drives, cloud storage and or brochures, catalogues, anthologies and books of JCDC entries in print or digital media, as well as the rights to broadcast on radio, television and the World Wide Web ... for four (4) years, taking effect as of the closing date for entries to the competition."
