Contribution to culture and entertainment honoured
Among the pomp and pageantry that usually accompany the annual national honours and awards ceremony, representatives of the music fraternity took their place of pride at yesterday's event.
This year, singer, actor and human-rights activist Harry Belafonte joined the list of persons who have been bestowed with the Order of Merit (OM) for his outstanding contribution in the cultural field.
The other persons honoured this year for their contribution to culture and entertainment included broadcaster Winston Barnes, who received the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander "for dedicated service to the Jamaican music industry and media".
Most of the honorees received the OD in the rank of Officer. Among them are Barbara Blake-Hannah; broadcaster Walter 'Bob' Clarke; deejay Winston 'Yellowman' Foster; Johnny Gourzong of Sumfest; broadcaster Dermot Hussey; writer and performer Joan Andrea Hutchinson; and Sheila Rickards "for contribution to the cultural arts, in particular the fields of music and dance".
