Jamaica Festival of Colours!
The buzz surrounding the Jamaica Festival of Colours has increased significantly as the December 16 date draws closer for the inaugural event.
The colourful powder-throwing,day-and-night party, which will transform the historic Aqueduct at Rose Hall, St James, is expected to attract a wide variety of revellers whose intentions are to enjoy music.
A special performance by King of the Dancehall Beenie Man, will be complemented by musical selections from the likes of the spirited Kurt Riley, the energetic ZJ Liquid, a forceful Jazzy T, and lively DJ Tippy around the turntables, coupled with the immortal Stone Love.
The event, which runs from
2 p.m. to 10 p.m., is touted as the kind of party that brings people from all walks of life together in a non-stop, fun-filled experience without any concern for caste or ethnicity.
The colours, according to the event's spokesperson, Lution Lewin of Cars to Cars Auto, Montego Bay, are simply a representation of that story and have become an expression of love.
Each colour is said to carry its own meaning, too: red represents purity and love; green represents vitality and new beginnings; and yellow is the colour of turmeric, which is what was historically used in the festival.
According to Lewin, the all-inclusive affair will allow patrons the opportunity to partake in a vibrant tradition that showcases a lifestyle that has already spread to North America and made its Jamaican debut in Kingston a few years ago.
"Ideally, this signals that there isn't a lack of opportunity to celebrate the various cultures that influence our lives here in Jamaica," Lewin said.
