Koffee’s Toast featured on Jordan Peele’s sophomore soundtrack

There is no stopping the steady climb of reggae artiste Koffee. Last week, following a screening at the SXSW Festival, it was revealed that her hit song, Toast , will be part of the soundtrack for the horror movie Us, written and directed by Academy Award winner Jordan Peele, and staring Lupita Nyong’o. Soon after, she became the youngest local act to top the Billboard Reggae Charts.

The news comes after some healthy servings of the young singjay across multiple platforms like her Would You Rather feature with The Fader magazine; being chosen as the cover for Deezer’s Chill Vibes playlist; and her performance in the ColorsXStudio. The 19-year-old’s social media platforms stand as evidence of her high demand – as she is photographed in locales all around the world.

As Koffee makes the rounds on the international scene, so does her music. According to Deadline.com, Peele’s critically acclaimed horror flick is currently upheld as the third-best horror opening of all time – raking in US$70.2 million, after New Line Cinema’s 2017 It (US$123.4 million) and Universal/Blumhouse/Miramax’s Halloween last year (US$76.2 million). Us, a film about an African American family and how their serene life turns to chaos after encountering their doppelgängers, also earned the accolade of the best opening for a live-action original since James Cameron’s 2009 Avatar (US$77 million).

On March 15, Koffee released her debut EP Rapture. When The Sunday Gleaner caught up with the young star recently, she was grateful for how she has been received by music lovers. “Mi feel good, mi nah lie. The people have been responding, and it’s been a lot to appreciate because ‘blessings fall pon wi life’. Mi love how did people dem a respond. I feel good that I’m able to finally make everybody hear what I’ve been up to ... what’s been on my mind, what’s going on in my life. Rapture is representative of that in this moment. It’s a good exchange,” she said.
