Soprano Diana Damrau and tenor Vittorio Grigolo star as Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers in Bartlett Sher’s romantic staging of Romeo et Juliet which encores this Sunday, July 7, 2019, 11:30 a.m. exclusively at Palace Cineplex.

Tony Awardwinning director Bartlett Sher’s new staging of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette updates the action to 18th Century Verona and conjures both the magic and heartbreak of this timeless love story. Tenor Vittorio Grigolo and soprano Diana Damrau enchant audiences as Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, with Damrau displaying glittering coloratura virtuosity and Grigolo delivering passionate longing and a moving rendition of the famous aria Ah! lève-toi, soleil! On the podium, maestro Gianandrea Noseda draws a wealth of orchestral colour from Gounod’s lush score.

The Creator

Charles-François Gounod (1818- 1893) was a French composer best known for his operas Faust and Romeo et Juliette and for his Ave Maria based on the first Prelude of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1 (1859). Except for concertos, he composed music in the major genres, but with varying success in the instrumental realm. Gounod was more at home in the vocal arena, particularly in opera and sacred music. He is generally regarded as a major figure in 19th Century French music.
