5 Questions with MC Nuffy

Andre Nelson, who is best known in entertainment circles as MC Nuffy, has been present on the dancehall scene since 1995. The ‘Daggering dance’ inventor has played various role in the industry, from dancer to DJ. In the early 2000s, the maverick of the industry was introduced to the television business where he hosted entertainment programmes on channels such as Hype TV and even starred in his own television series.

Prior to his years as an MC, Nuffy had dreams of following in the footsteps of his father to become a jockey. At the age of 15, young Nuffy would spend most of his days at Caymanas Park in St Catherine. It was at the race track that he got his name Nuffy after a friend named Tony who said he always wanted to ‘nuff’ up himself and intervene in the affairs of the older folk.

Nuffy is slated to be the MC for Reggae Sumfest’s Global Sound Clash next Thursday in Montego Bay. The event, scheduled to take place at Pier 1, will see Ricky Trooper, Pink Panther, Warrior Sound, Yard Beat and King Turbo facing off in a mega clash.

Nuffy is also rostered as the the closing MC for Reggae Sumfest’s Festival Night 1, next Friday. He is urging patrons to come out early for both events, specifically the soundclash, as a lyrical war is in the air. The popular MC is also looking forward to closing the night traditionally known as dancehall night with newcomers to the dancehall scene, the 6ixes set to underline their claim as the baddest boys in dancehall.

“The greatest thing that I like about this show, you have so much experience people and so much performers. Is the best line up this for a long while that Sumfest has ever had,” Nuffy said about this year’s festival.

 

In preparation for the big events, we caught up with Nuffy for this week’s 5 Questions with...

 

 

1. What is one thing people wouldn’t believe about you?

 

Me God-fearing and mi easy fi fall in love. I’m a lover to be honest.

 

 

2. What would your life be without a cellphone?

 

My cellphone is my life so to me without a cellphone there would be no life. Life without a cellphone or other electronics wouldn’t make sense.

 

3. What is your favourite thing about being an MC?

 

My favourite thing about being an MC is holding the mic. Once mi hold the mic, that’s me. It’s like an electric thing you plug in. That is my favourite thing, honestly, just gimmie the mic in my hand and I’m moving, I’m ready!

 

4. What preparations have you been making for Sumfest?

 

Nuffy nuh prepare fi nothing enuh, because mi multi-talented. Only thing mi prepare a mi clothes. Me have natural talent about me. I never have a plan yet because at the end of the day, when yuh deh the show the plan will change. So mi just prepare mi clothes, guh a di show and mash it up.

 

5. Are you confident that the 6ix will do well in closing dancehall night?

 

The 6ix a guh get them business fix! A lot of people a worry up themself bout if them can do it and I know they can do it. This is history in the making. Them a guh get them business fix and set trend. Trust mi, a fi dem show man.
