Tosh Alexander not here to play ‘Games’
“I’ve come into a space where I just believe that nothing happens before its time, and I feel like people are hearing me now, because I’m so seasoned and ready. When people hear me now I’m not only a singer, but an entertainer. I know who I am, I am confident in myself and in my talent.” That was the sentiment expressed by singer Tosh Alexander back in 2017. Fast-forward two years and it seems the rising star, who has returned to Jamaica after actively pursuing music in the United States, has not only found her niche, but may have also found that ‘hit’ song.
Her latest single, Games, has been described by Rolling Stones as a ‘rejuvenated’ spin on Serani’s 2008 hit of the same name. Alexander’s single may have borrowed from Serani’s hook, but the song is a whole new vibe. The track offers up a fresh view on game playing in relationships, something Alexander wants no part of. She makes it very clear in the chorus that she is looking for a full-time commitment and doesn’t want to play any games with her love interest. The song, she says, was inspired by actual events. “My material is normally a representation of something I’ve gone through or people around me. I’ve definitely experienced what I’m singing about in the song, and I know a lot of females share the same sentiments,” she told The Gleaner.
The topic and her fun, fresh approach may be the reason the song has racked up close to 400,000 views since its release less than a month ago. An overwhelmed Tosh believes those numbers are testament to her growth as an artiste. “Growth and progress are what I aim for, so it’s showing in the numbers, and it’s truly gratifying. It’s been a year since I released my last project, so it feels good to share my work again and have people received it well,” she said. “We’ve been hearing it (the song) described as genius and infectious. I am extremely proud to have been able to recreated a classic, but from a female point of view, over a pop and-dancehall fused record that is palatable to that demographic.”
Now that she may have found the song to gain her the international buzz she’s been working towards, Tosh Alexander says her next goal is to be mentioned among the greats whenever conversations about legends come up. She wants her music to have longevity. “My ultimate goal, regardless of where I am, is to be a top-performing international artiste mentioned along with the greatest to ever do it, and with every release, I believe I’m one step closer to achieving that goal,” she said.
