Since 2005, Jamaican gospel artiste DJ Nicholas has contributed significantly to the playlists of Christians across Jamaica and beyond. Among his popular songs are Naa Bow and Sad Story. But despite releasing a slew of songs, the music minister has produced only six albums: On the Shout (2005), Louder Than Ever (2008), School of Volume (2011), The Audiologist (2017), Rolling Tunes (2017) and a Church Fi Di World EP (2013).

In an interview with The Gleaner, Nicholas revealed that he will be releasing music more regularly this year.

“I have to rewind from the past years. I used to take an approach where I would release one album every three years or more. Now I am taking a different approach and putting out music more regularly, whether they get the views or not, or get the airplay or not. I believe we are evangelists.

“So last year I released about eight songs and a video. This year, starting January, I have a video coming out this month and a new song. And by the help of God, I’ll be releasing at least one song every month. So that’s the new approach that I am taking.”

The music evangelist is also the proud father of two children, and is aware of the hard work ahead.

“Of course, it is hard work, I’ll admit that, especially when it is Caribbean gospel, or reggae gospel and dancehall gospel.”

However, he believes that “the Bible and the Word of God is always very relevant; therefore, gospel music will always be relevant”.

Evangelism and ministry

But gospel music is a form of entertainment and he, therefore, wants his counterparts in the music industry to stay committed and remember that the primary purpose of their music is evangelism and ministry.

“We believe that we are called by God. We have a purpose; God gave us a vision and a mandate. And once we stay committed to the cause, once we stay at the foot of the cross. I believe God will continue using it and opening doors, and we also believe in God for bigger doors, as well.”

Currently, DJ Nicholas has a new video to his song Still Ah Try, as well as his clothing line called Bible Addict Apparel.

On Wednesday, DJ Nicholas was the closing act at the Jamaica Youth for Christ show, Genesis 2020. The popular event was held at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, Hope Road, St Andrew.
