For the first time ever, Jamaican roots play actors and actresses will be formally recognised for their work. The Jamaica Roots Theatre Foundation, in association with Dynamite Productions and Lacell Entertainment, presents the inaugural Roots Play Awards.

The event is set for this evening at the Hibiscus Lodge Hotel in Ocho Rios, beginning at 6:30.

The brainchild of playwright and producer, Everton Dawkins of Dynamite Productions, the event will honour several persons who, for decades, have kept Jamaicans laughing, without being recognised for their efforts.

Among the theatre stalwarts who will be honoured are Maxwell Grant, who has served Jamaican theatre for over 50 years. Grant, now 74, starred in several hit comedy plays, including Maama Man, Bashment Granny, Passa Passa and Man Fi Get Bun.

Also to be honoured is Andrea ‘Delcita’ Wright, who has delighted Jamaicans for many years; and Bad Boy Trevor and Judith Shank, both of whom also have careers in theatre stretching back 30 years.

Another actor/ comedian, Leighton Smith, will provide entertainment for the event.

The guest speaker will be Lenny Salmon, with emcee duties being shared by comedian Lemon and Myesha Broadie.
