In 2022, cinemas had their grandest return to form yet. Many of the year's biggest films were defined by the cinema experience. If you didn’t get a chance to see them all, here’s a list of the year's finest.

10. Black Panther Wakanda Forever

After introducing the world to Wakanda in 2018, Ryan Coogler and crew up the stakes significantly with the sequel. The movie not only stands up as a terrific blockbuster, but it’s a touching tribute to the departed Chadwick Boseman, whose performance made Black Panther a household name.

9. Three Thousand Years Of Longing

The best movie that almost no one saw, but, once you see it, you’ll be hard-pressed to forget it. George Miller's story of stories is an enchanting spectacle grounded by the very personal performances of Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton.

8. The Batman

It’s almost infuriating to say but yet another Batman film makes it to the top 10. It seems the story of Bruce Wayne still has some life left in it. Matt Reeves' direction gives a terrifying atmosphere to Robert Pattinson’s outing as the caped crusader.

7. Till

Hard to watch but impossible to look away from. Till reminds us of the importance of shining a light on the horrors of the world, lest they hide in the dark, with a career-defining performance by Danielle Deadwyler to boot.

6. Avatar 2 - The Way of Water

They said he couldn’t do it, but James Cameron showed otherwise. The impressive visuals of Avatar are worth the price of admission, but with an ensemble cast with compelling storylines. ‘The Way of Water’ is the full package and then some.

5. The Northman

Take the story of Hamlet, give it a Nordic shine, and throw in the kind of gore that would make a horror fanatic blush, and you get The Northman. The twisted and savage story of revenge is a breathtaking epic that I’ll remember forever.

4. RRR

To date, I have seen RRR a total of four and a half times. I’ve recommended it to everyone I know. If there’s one film you watch from this list, or for the rest of your life, make it RRR. It’s a film-making feat with moment after moment that makes you want to stand up and cheer, or sit there slack-jawed in awe.

3. Everything Everywhere All At Once

There’s no greater joy than a film like this. One that comes out of nowhere and surprises you in ways you never thought to imagine. Incredibly heartfelt with a mind towards the ludicrous. Prepare to laugh, and prepare to cry.

2. Nope

With each film he makes, Jordan Peele further solidifies his rank as one of the best to ever do it. Nope is an astounding achievement for the director, with one of the most unforgettable climaxes in recent memory.

1. Barbarian

Horror films came to play for 2022, and play they did. Easily the most impressive genre of the year with so many quality films, Barbarian stands out among the crowd. The less said about the movie the better. It’s truly meant to be seen to be believed.

Here’s to another year of amazing films, and an even greater return to cinemas in 2023.
