Becoming a mother is arguably one of the most life-altering experiences. With no set rules on how to get the job done perfectly, mothers who are often regarded as everyday superheroes give it their best and in turn reap immeasurable joy amid all the challenges that come with the role. Speaking with The Sunday Gleaner, former dancer Keiva Di Diva took a moment to share some words of advice to all the new mommies this Mother’s Day.

“It’s going to be hard but just be patient and put your child first at all times. Be strong, pray a lot and focus. Don’t watch other mothers, just focus and do the right thing. We know the right thing but sometimes people don’t like to do it because it is too hard. So just pray hard and be focused and you will get there, I am telling you,” she shared.

Keiva had her beautiful daughter Destiny Chung at the end of her 20s and once she became pregnant with her, she knew her life would be taking a complete turn.

“When I had my child, almost everything changed for me and I have no regrets. Partying was one of the first things that changed, I didn’t want to attend too much. I stopped spending on certain things, and I wanted to be [a] 100 per cent mother to my child. If I did my hair every week, I stopped doing those stuff, things I used to buy, I start buying less. Fighting with people and those things just eventually gone. If I should be in an argument with someone, I think about her. I am more patient and much calmer. There are a lot of changes but out of everything it is patience. I see life on a different scale,” Keiva said.

WASN’T ENTIRELY EASY

Things were not entirely easy in the beginning but now with her daughter navigating high school and at the start of her teenage years, Keiva thinks she has caught the hang of things as she aims to impart the best morals and values to her daughter.

“I pray that my child receives what I have been giving to her and just follow through. I beg the Lord to bless her. So far, I have no problems with her in terms of morals and so on and I am just hoping that she continues like that,” she said.

Keiva furthered that she grew up in a very strict household and the experience of having both parents being disciplinarians made her so confident in who she is today. The lessons she learnt as a child are those she tries to teach to her daughter now and though she may not always be perfect or get it right, she constantly makes the effort to do just that.

“It is very challenging, and it is hard work and with what is going on now in this new generation, it is one of the hardest jobs – but I don’t have any problems. I enjoy it! I just have to be firm and stand on my two feet and know that whatever it takes to get my daughter to where she needs to be, I am willing to do so,” Keiva disclosed.

She cheerfully added that with all she has given up, she cannot leave behind her short shorts because being a mom does not mean you cannot still be ‘sexy’.

“I tell her that I have to have my shorts and she understands that. I love my short shorts and being confident. I love myself and I love looking good and she understands that. When we go out together, I definitely tone things down, but I cannot let go of my short shorts,” she said.

Keiva owns and operates her own clothing store and has a skin tone stocking brand to help people feel more confident when showing more legs.
