Pitchy Patchy returns tonight with some new faces, including noted entertainer and YouTuber Wayne Marshall. Joining the group of actors and influencers, the charismatic Jamaican singer and deejay is eager to make his debut, telling The Gleaner he’s ready for the challenge.

“Making my debut on a theatre stage is a very exciting challenge for me. That has been on the cards for a while now. I’ve actually read scripts before, but I think it’s the right time and production for me to rise to the occasion. The family vlog is completely unscripted, so that’s the biggest difference. In Pitchy Patchy there are many different roles that I have to step into and different lines to learn,” said Marshall.

Inspired by local theatre and comedic greats such as “Oliver Samuels, Glen Campbell, [and] Volier Johnson,” he shared that he jumped right into rehearsals, though at times it proved challenging with his already-demanding schedule. “The most difficult part is the time regimen and working alongside so many different cast and crew to make it a special experience. It’s hard to balance all I have on my plate with the rigorous performance and rehearsal schedule. But it makes it all the more rewarding when it comes together and we get it right,” he said.

Not revealing all the secrets about his character, he shared that fans will have the chance to see him play multiple roles. “I will actually be playing quite a few different characters, because it’s not a typical play with one consistent storyline; it’s a revue that compiles a number of skits. That makes it very dynamic, there is something for everyone in it,” said Marshall, adding that he will also get to use his musical talents. “There are a few musical moments in it that I’m really looking forward to. We have been in rehearsals, working hard with talented singers, dancers and musicians,” he shared.

FAMILY SUPPORT

From running lines to helping to develop his performance, the entire Meet the Mitchells family is on board with Marshall’s new role. “My wife and family are very supportive of this new endeavour. Sometimes it’s me and them working through lines and developing aspects of my performance,” said Marshall. He notes that wife Tami Chin Mitchell’s Thespian roots have come in handy. “Tami has a theatre background, so she understands the work that goes into making a successful production,” he shared.

Just hours away from opening night, he is excited to see the crowd’s reaction. “I’m looking forward to opening night, seeing and hearing the response and reactions from the live audience.” As for expectations, Marshall feels like this is only the beginning. “I’m just going to go out there and give it my best shot and see where the chips fall. I do feel like it might be the beginning of something really good. I’m learning a lot from the entire team. So many fine details to the stage craft that would be impossible to learn without being in this environment. I believe it’s going to be a great show for the entire family, so everybody should come and support the show,” he said.

So, could more plays or acting roles be on the horizon for Marshall? He’s not ruling it out. “I’m taking life one step at a time. Who knows what will be next on the agenda. I’m definitely going into the studio to get some music out soon. As for acting in the future, we will see. It’s all about getting the right role with the right cast and crew,” said Marshall.

Pitchy Patchy is being shown at the Philip Sherlock Centre at The University of the West Indies, Mona campus, from September 6 to 24. The gala night is set for September 9.
