Kingston Creative’s monthly Artwalk festival will spotlight the artistic work of local film-makers and digital content creators on Sunday.

The festivities will kick off with a ‘Lights, Camera, Kingston’ bus tour, which offers insight into the rich history of the downtown theatre scene as intrepid culture lovers explore the iconic Ward, Queens, Ambassador, and Gaiety theatres. As this is happening, patrons will be serenaded with live performances from DJ Fenix, the Music House Youth ensemble, and the Denham Town drummers.

The day culminates with shopping in the artisan village, domino matches, a cosplay competition, and a jazz performance by Emily Ruth & Ensemble.

Deputy Director of Kingston Creative Janet Crick emphasised that film is not just entertainment, but an art form that connects people to social realities.

Honouring the brilliant minds

“We are not just showcasing films and digital content; we’re honouring the brilliant minds behind them – the young producers, writers, actors, directors, animators, make-up artists and digital artists – who passionately craft their art in unique forms. We aim to give creators exposure, a platform in the heart of the city to highlight their work and showcase their talents to a diverse audience, while providing a fun learning experience for everyone,” Crick stated.

Film enthusiasts can delve into the significance of Caribbean cinema with Mapping Caribbean Cinema, a documentary series that unravels the history and challenges faced by cinema venues in Kingston, particularly the Ward Theatre. The Africa World Documentary from The University of the West Indies Literatures in English Department will showcase films from their archives. Women in Film and Television will present feature films by female film-makers.

“There are so many talented minds out there who just need a platform. Given that Jamaica is home to many films of historical significance, we want to see our people engaged and inspired, and one way for us to do that is to bring creativity to their interests,” said Red Stripe Flavours Brand Manager, Jodi-Ann Campbell.

The Kingston Creative Artwalk, in partnership with Main Event Entertainment Group, Catherine’s Peak, the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation, and Red Stripe Flavours, is set to feature paint-and-sip sessions with artist Dan Thompson, video game showcases, cosplay contests, art exhibitions and virtual reality experiences.
