Magnum 25 plaques for key dancehall figures
As Magnum Tonic Wine celebrates its 25th anniversary, the brand is honouring 25 influential dancehall figures who have played a major role in shaping dancehall music and culture.
These key players, from performers to behind-the-scenes movers and shakers, have elevated dancehall’s status locally and globally, breaking many barriers.
“This milestone event is not just a celebration of the individuals being honoured, but also a tribute to the enduring impact of dancehall,” a press release stated. From Kingston’s streets to stages around the world, dancehall has evolved into a force that continues to dominate the global music scene.
“Magnum has always been about celebrating the authentic spirit of dancehall,” said Brandon Wallace, brand manager for Magnum Tonic Wine. “This anniversary gives us the opportunity to reflect on the genre’s growth and evolution while paying tribute to the men and women who have made an indelible mark on the culture. There are so many, but we decided to select 25 to align with our milestone. While we wish we could acknowledge all the incredible contributors to dancehall over the years, this selection represents a good mix.”
Since its inception, Magnum has been intertwined with dancehall, continuously championing the energy, creativity, and dynamism of the genre. Through bold and unapologetic support, the brand has cemented its place as a staple in the dancehall community. The selection of honourees will include a mix of pioneers, emerging stars, producers, disc jockeys and sound systems – enduring contributors – all of whom have helped shape dancehall’s identity and kept it thriving over the past quarter century.
One of the first honourees to receive recognition was Spice, who was presented with the commemorative plaque during her Mirror 25 album launch. Widely celebrated as the Queen of the Dancehall, Spice was acknowledged for her remarkable contributions to the genre.
Other recipients include dancehall artiste Ding Dong, selector Boom Boom, popular dancer Gabbidon and Whitfield ‘Father Witty’ Henry, the promoter behind the iconic Uptown Mondays street dance. There are just a few of the 25 individuals recognised by Magnum.
This announcement comes as part of Magnum’s larger 25th-anniversary campaign, which has already included the launch of several high-profile albums from stars like Bayka, Govana, and Bugle.
