Drinking red wine could help to stave off coronavirus
A new study has revealed that those who consumed five or more glasses of red wine per week were 17 per cent less likely to be at risk from COVID-19 compared to non-drinkers.
Scientists believe that the reduced risk could be as a result of the drink's high polyphenol content, which can prevent flu and other respiratory conditions, but have warned people not to drink to excess.
Consumption of white wine and champagne was also found to fight off the disease but those who enjoy beer and cider had a 28 per cent increased risk of contracting the virus.
The study concluded: "The COVID risk appears to vary across different alcoholic beverage subtypes, frequency, and amount.
"Red wine, white wine, and champagne have the chance to reduce this risk of COVID-19. Consumption of beer and cider and spirits and heavy drinking is not recommended during the epidemics.
"Public health guidance should focus on reducing the risk of COVID-19 by advocating healthy lifestyle habits and preferential policies among consumers of beer and cider and spirits."
