Scientists graft human brain cells into rats

Lab-grown nerves were implanted into baby rodents and it is hoped that the move could help to develop a better understanding of conditions such as epilepsy.

Unlike previous attempts on adult rats, the cells were absorbed quickly and made up a third of the brain within six months.

The cells have now become a part of the rats' decision-making and physical reactions.

Lead author Professor Sergiu Paca of Stanford University in the US, said: "These findings may improve our ability to produce realistic models of human diseases."

Austrian expert Dr Jurgen Knoblich added: "The human brain is home to some of the most horrific diseases and we don't understand it very well.

"These findings could have an impact on research into neurological diseases such as epilepsy, or autism."

The rats were not allowed to think like people during the trial and experts have warned that scientists must be careful not to give the rodents human thoughts or feelings.
