Princess Alice Countess of Athlone, arrives for annual sojourn

Her Royal Highness, Princess Alice Countess of Athlone, graced Jamaica with her annual visit, arriving aboard the Fyttes Camito from Southampton, England. Welcomed on board by dignitaries including His Excellency the Governor-General Sir Clifford Campbell and Lady Campbell, Phillip Sherlock, vice chancellor of The University of the West Indies, and other distinguished figures, Princess Alice, who holds the position of chancellor at The University of the West Indies, is scheduled to preside over upcoming University Council meetings.

Princess Alice arrives

Her Royal Highness, Princess Alice Countess of Athlone, arrived in Jamaica yesterday morning aboard the  Fyttes Camito from Southhampton, England on her annual visit.

She was greeted aboard ship by His Excellency the Governor-General Sir Clifford Campbell and Lady Campbell, Phillip Sherlock, vice chancellor of The University of the West Indies and Mrs Sherlock, Noel Crosswell, commissioner of police; Brigadier Paul Crooks, chief of staff, the Jamaica Defence Force; Capt Richard Langley, ADC to the governor general; Capt N. O’Gilvie ,who will be ADC to Her Royal Highness during her four-week stay in Jamaica, and  J.A. Porter, assistant manager of United Fruit Company, which represents Fyffes Line in Jamaica.

Princess Alice, who is chancellor of The University of the West Indies, will preside over meetings of the University Counell next week and also attend the sixth annual Musical Evening in aid of the Hyacinth Lightbourne Visiting Nursing Service to be held at King’s House on Monday, February 17.

Shortly after her arrival, Her Royal Highness, accompanied by her lady-in waiting the Lady Helena Gibbs, motored to Arcadia, Duncans where she will spend the first week of her stay.  She returns to Kingston on Monday, February 17 to stay at King’s House.

Princess Alice will later make a tour of a number of West Indian islands and return to Jamaica to attend the formal opening of The University of the West Indies Medical School building on April 8.

Princess Alice is expected to return to England in May.
