Jamaica flag to Israeli captain

“This flag knows no colours. It is one that embraces all mankind, and I trust that you will treasure it,” said the Prime Minister, the Hon. Sir Alexander Bustamante yesterday morning as he presented a Jamaican flag to Captain Tuve Smolensk, Master of the Israeli Cruise Ship Jerusalem.

Sir Alexander had, earlier, received the flag of Israel from Captain Smolensk.

Occasion was a buffet luncheon at Casa Monte Hotel for the 130-odd members of the Greater Miami Israel Association who made a short stop here yesterday. They arrived yesterday morning on board the Jerusalem and left in the afternoon. The luncheon was given by the United Congregation of Israelites in Jamaica. Before their departure, the members of the Greater Miami Israel Association held a reception on board the Jerusalem.

Accompanied by Lady Bustamante, Sir Alexander received the flag of Israel on behalf of the people of Jamaica and assured Captain Smolensk that he would “honour and keep it well”.

The flag of the city of Kingston was presented to Mr. Ben Esson, a Miami lawyer, by the Deputy Mayor, Councilor Balfour Barnswell. The other presentation, of a book of the history of the Jews in Jamaica over the past 300 years, was made to Captain Smolensk by Mr. Aaron Matalon, Honorary Israeli Consul in Jamaica.

Before the presentations, Mrs. Alisa Dover, wife of the Israeli Consul General to the south-eastern states of the U.S.A., read a message from the Prime Minister of Israel to the people of Jamaica.

The message conveyed greetings to the citizens of Jamaica and praised the friendly manner in which all people lived in Jamaica.

Chairman was Mr. Felix Shalom, president of the United Congregation of Israelites in Jamaica.
