Feel all right with a One Love Café smoothie
As I sat under the shade provided by the mango tree at the home of the late legend Robert Nesta Marley along Hope Road in St Andrew, the refreshing Get Up, Stand Up smoothie was just what the doctor recommended.
Maurice 'Moodsky' Taylor, of the Bob Marley One Love CafÈ, was the man responsible for my tasty and filling drink. He enjoys preparing food. As a teenager, it was only fitting for him to perfect his skills at the Runaway Bay HEART/Trust NTA, studying Food and Beverage Management.
Fast-forward to two years ago when he was employed by the One Love CafÈ.
"When I started here, there were not a lot of smoothies or shakes on the menu. As a matter of fact, they only had a green juice mix called No More Trouble, and the Easy Skanking. I wanted to change that. Sunflower and pumpkin seeds are very nutritious, and I wanted to add them to drinks. So one evening after work, I went home and tried a few things and came the next day with a few new ingredients. The supervisor at the time liked it so much that it was added to the menu. And as they say, the rest is history," shared Moodsky with a proud smile.
Today, there are at least seven mixes, all named after one of Bob's songs or speeches - dairy-free, freshly made, customisable, and of course, delicious. For an extra oomph, alcoholic beverages such as rum or Guinness can be added, which will only alter the cost of the smoothies that start at $600.
Food sampled three of the smoothies, starting with No More Trouble, a green juice blend of cucumber, cabbage, lettuce, celery and spices. I am no fan of it, but this bad boy would be the perfect morning drink to boost any day - especially with the fact that it improves the immune system and helps with bowel movement.
We then went to War - the latest addition to the menu - a balanced meal supplement made from mandarin, peach, strawberry, banana, flaxseed, spices and soy powder. It was perfect for persons on the go. Nothing to fight about with this one!
Get up, Stand Up was certainly one for the road. I could see why it has been a crowd pleaser. A divine blend of peanuts, oats, Irish moss, banana, and honey, Get Up, Stand Up hit the right spots.
But don't take my word for it. Head on over to the Bob Marley One Love CafÈ and try one ... or two ... or three for yourself.
