The University of the West Indies, Mona campus has a new 'chill spot' and first-rate eatery - the Boardwalk Cafe.

Across from the Faculty of Law on the university's famed Ring Road, the location that was previously the deli Submerge has been revamped. With a variety of healthy options, the Boardwalk Cafe caters to students' tastes and health.

When Food visited, it was just before the lunch-hour rush, but the cafe was already buzzing with students who were warmly greeted by staff. Some were 'chilling' with friends, while others were glued to their books, laptops or smart devices.

Owner Gloria Ranger said she retained the existing staff members when she took over the space because she wanted the students to be immediately comfortable there.

 

Menu

 

The menu offers the best of both worlds - mouth-watering treats as well as healthier choices. Ranger said it is important to her that the students have healthy options for their on-the-go lifestyle. She has also introduced a faster preparation time so that students who are in a rush can be accommodated.

The menu now includes wraps such as a smoked salmon, tuna, chicken, ham and pineapple. There are also delectable yet healthy salads for meat lovers and vegetarians alike. Tacos and sandwiches are also on the menu, in addition to a grilled chicken panini that includes a signature sauce.

Cafes are known for coffee and other beverages and Boardwalk Cafe is no different. They boast natural fruit and green juices, as well as smoothies that are sure to hit the spot. Boardwalk Cafe also offers cold and hot coffee beverages for all coffee lovers and those who might need an extra boost while studying or working on a major paper.

But while Ranger said she wants to cater to a healthier lifestyle, she does not believe that there is any harm in indulging every now and then. For this, they have sweet potato pudding and cheesecake that are sure to please.

While customers can now go and grab a bite at Boardwalk Cafe, the official opening is not until Thursday, October 6.
