Severe menstrual pain NOT normal

YOU HAVE probably heard that pain with your period is part of being a woman. It is not true. Painful periods that impact your daily functioning are not normal.

Most women get period pain at some point in their lives as part of their menstrual cycle. It is usually felt as painful muscle cramps in the tummy, which can spread to the back and thighs.

The pain sometimes comes in intense spasms, while at other times it may be dull but more constant. It may also vary with each period. Some periods may cause little or no discomfort, while others may be more painful. Sometimes you may get pelvic pain even when you do not have your period.

Every month, thousands of women suffer from severe period pain. The associated problems are so difficult to deal with: endometriosis, pelvic scarring, and perhaps infertility.

Dr Andre Williams, integrative oncologist at Teshuva Wellness, believes the body was created to be able to regulate itself. He believes that the solution to this pelvic pain is to reset the damaged nerves in the pelvic region. The body, he said, has an electrical system or autonomic nervous system, that permeates every aspect of our body.

“Your autonomic nervous system is a network of nerves throughout your body that control unconscious processes. These are things that happen without you thinking about them, such as breathing and your heart beating. Your autonomic nervous system is always active, even when you are asleep, and it is key to your continued survival,” Dr Williams said.

In relation to pelvic pain, Dr Williams said the pelvis houses a meshwork of fine autonomic nerves that are not under our voluntary control, situated on the deep aspects of each sidewall. These nerves can be affected by endometriosis, which often causes gastrointestinal, bladder symptoms, bowel issues, bloating, headache, back pain during and after intercourse, on top of the normal nerve pain and damage.

“Period pain is a sign that there is something wrong inside the pelvic area. If you have severe period pain or your normal pattern of periods changes, for example, if your periods become heavier than usual or irregular, we conduct a thorough examination to determine if our treatment is best for you,” Dr Williams said.

Dr Williams utilises a combination of Prolozone Therapy that marries concepts of Neural Therapy, Prolotherapy, and Ozone Therapy. It involves injecting various combinations of procaine, anti-inflammatory medications/homeopathic, vitamins, minerals, proliferative, and a mixture of ozone/oxygen gas into degenerated or injured joints, and into areas of pain.

During a weekly ‘Health Talk’ Sunday Series, Dr Williams said the result of this combination is nothing short of remarkable in that damaged tissues can be regenerated, and otherwise untreatable pain can be permanently cured.

“This method resets damaged nerves, reduces inflammation, stimulates growth factor production, and stimulates circulation. It is very safe, relatively painless, using special local anaesthetic under the skin around the navel. This procedure is also called the Navel Reset Experience, and we have seen very good results,” he said.

Between 2017 and 2022, Dr Williams has seen over 45 cases at Teshuva Wellness, and according to him, his patients have said the ‘Navel Reset Experience’ is more than just a procedure, it is a relief of pain that has changed their lives. He indicated that as they keep track of the women that have done the procedure, they continue to modify and improve the technique based on outcome.

“No sedation is required, and it is done by the bedside. It takes about 25 minutes, and persons can return to work the same day. Injections sting a little for a few seconds, but patients have reported an immediate overwhelming sense of relaxation,” Dr Williams said.

Since September 2022, Dr Williams has treated 25 cases with this method. “The treatment is non-toxic, and it is not done, five days before, or five days after the period, because the body is already anticipating a period. We do not want to disrupt the menstrual cycle, so the other days are preferred,” he said.

After treatment, the next cycle is occasionally painful, but by the second cycle there is significant pain reduction. At least 80 per cent of these women report reduction in pain by at least 50 per cent. This includes pain during the period and pain outside of the period.

“Most women report other benefits including better mood, better sleep, better enjoyment of sex, and no more bloating or breast tenderness prior to their period,” Dr Williams said.
