The Caribbean Medical Professionals’ Summit set to catapult attendees’ careers

WITH LESS than one week to go until the inaugural Caribbean Medical Professionals’ Summit (CAMPS), the medical fraternity in Jamaica and the region is gearing up for an insightful weekend.

On May 31 to June 2, medical professionals and aspirants from across the Caribbean region will descend on The Jamaica Pegasus hotel for the transformative two-day career development, wellness, and networking experience. The summit will double as a hybrid event with a virtual component for those who prefer the convenience of attending online.

The summit will commence on Friday with an evening networking mixer. Saturday, June 2, and Sunday, June 3, will be two full days for physicians who want to have expert guidance on global opportunities for further training, get playbooks on how to leverage their medical knowledge and skills in the world of business, and start on the road to experiencing holistic wellness and development.

Shawna-Kaye Lester, organiser of the event, has for over a decade supported medical doctors across the Caribbean seeking career development opportunities. “Our planning committee is excited about our line-up of over 24 brilliant speakers. We are confident that everyone who attends will leave CAMPS way ahead of the curve, equipped with the knowledge and network to take life-changing steps in their careers and personal lives,” Lester said.

June 1 and June 2 are scheduled to be the hard-hitting days. Day one will feature a keynote address from Kemi Doll, MD, a physician, groundbreaking researcher and career coach who will place keen focus on achieving ‘Your Unapologetic Career’. In addition, the chairperson of the board of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr Tochi Iroku-Maliz, will facilitate a session on ‘Ethics as a Healthcare Leader’. Doctors Kamilah Spencer and Trena Stoute, co-founders of telemedicine company Global Med Corporation, will lead a fireside chat titled ‘Outside the Traditional Box’.

The second and final day will see Dr Shafi Ahmed, artificial intelligence (AI) expert and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, making his keynote speech on the topic ‘Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Public Health’, providing guidance on how health and medical professionals can safeguard their careers as the use of AI surges. He will be followed by consultant anesthetist and PLAB examiner Dr Douglas, who will share on ‘UK Pathways for the Caribbean Medical Doctor’.

In addition to the keynote presentations on both days, attendees will undergo a 75-minute skills workshop, focusing on the business of medicine, mentorship, medical AI and faith-based approaches to care. Mental health sessions are also on the agenda for the summit, ensuring attendees will be equipped to beat burnout in a taxing career.
