Don't Be Afraid to say No

Dian Bartley, media and communications manager for the Community Safety and Security Branch at the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), has issued a strong word of advice to parents, urging them not to get complacent in raising their children.

Speaking at the National Child Month Committee's media launch yesterday, she noted that some guardians have become lax in enforcing discipline on their children.

"Parents, do not be afraid to set boundaries for your children. Too many of our children have no boundaries to keep them in check. They need our guidance and need to learn the necessary skills to protect themselves," she said.

"Adults are now too timid to tell their children no. There is no harm in a little restriction, this will teach them how to make decisions, and also, when they should say no. We have adapted a liberal kind of parenting, allowing too many things to slide," she declared.

Be inquisitive

Bartley added, "We often claim that we don't want to trespass on their rights and space, but I implore guardians, do not be afraid to search the rooms and the different sections of your house, you are the one in charge. No child should have any sign on their doors saying 'Do Not disturb'. You don't have to be invasive or intrusive, but you must be inquisitive."

Bartley also called on persons to strengthen their communities, adding that everyone has a role to play.
