The United States government, through its local ambassador, yesterday said that it empathised with the family of the Jamaican police constable, Crystal Thomas, who was shot dead on Tuesday in Kingston while on her way home from work.

The US government has also pledged to "stand with the Government of Jamaica against lawless criminals".

In a statement, United States Ambassador Luis G. Moreno offered "deep and sincere condolences to the family and colleagues of Constable Thomas, who lost her life in the line of duty".

Meanwhile, Moreno has heaped commendations on Jamaica's security forces.

"Every day law-enforcement officers across Jamaica step into the line of duty. I commend these officers and know they will continue to carry out their duties professionally and justly."

He added that, "Tragically, all too many officers as well as everyday Jamaicans have lost their lives to this senseless violence".
