A major fire this morning destroyed a large section of the popular 'Shoes Market' on South Street in Montego Bay, St James.

It's the second time in five years that the structure is being razed.

The fire, which started at about 2 o'clock, destroyed some 30 shops.

"The fire started on South Street and we just saw it running through the middle of the complex ," said one vendor.

Henry McCurdy, the People's  National Party's North West St James caretaker, said he saw the blaze from the verandah from his home in Fairfield, about three miles away.

"To have this happen at this time of the year when people have restocked for Independence and back to school, is very sad. They are going to need urgent help to pick up the pieces."

The fire was contained by the St. James Fire Department by 3:15 a.m, that's just over an hour after it started.

Final damage estimates have not been ascertained, but will amount to several million dollars.
