The Transport Ministry is reporting that the number of deaths from road crashes since the start of the year has reached 151.

The 151 deaths in the past 148 days represent a two per cent increase over the corresponding period last year.

The ministry says motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable road users accounting for 48 of the 151 fatalities.

Statistics from the Road Safety Unit show that only one of victims was wearing a helmet.

The Transport Ministry is encouraging motorcyclists to wear protective devices such as safety gloves, elbow and knee pads, helmets and motor cycle jackets.

"These will go a far way in helping reduce the impact of a crash on the human body," said a Ministry spokesperson in a release.
