Court halts INDECOM's arrest of senior cop

A High Court judge barred the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) from arresting a high-ranking police officer and a constable on murder charges.
Justice Bryan Sykes on Wednesday granted an injunction barring INDECOM from taking any action against Superintendent Everton Tabannah and Constable Worrell Latchman until the legal challenge to their impending arrest is heard by Judicial Review Court .
The policemen were also granted leave to take their case to the Judicial Review Court.
Tabannah and Latchman were informed by INDECOM earlier this year that they would be charged with murder arising from the shooting death of Donald Chin in Rose Heights, St James, in October 2012.
Law-enforcement sources also revealed that in keeping with the INDECOM Act, Police Commissioner Dr Carl Williams was informed of the impending arrests.
TURNING OVER INFORMATION
However, through their attorneys, the policemen argued that contrary to the same legislation, the oversight body has refused to turn over all the information relied on when it took the decision to charge them.
As a result, according to the attorneys, Tabannah and Latchman decided to exercise their right to have judicial review of INDECOM's decision.
